Bleeding Gums

It is quite natural to come across instances of bleeding gums. But as you notice that they bleed frequently, it might be the time to consult a physician, preferably a dentist to rule out the cause and consequences of bleeding gums.

Noticing stains of blood as you bite out a chunk from an apple may let you think that its skin was hard to bite out, but, from a dentist’s point of view, it may lead them to clinically examine the health and structure of your gums as bleeding gums can have its reasons which are not to be taken lightly.

What causes our gums to bleed?

As we discuss bleeding gums, it is crucial to understand that, gums that bleed due to an external injury is ordinary which would heal with time. Gums that tend to bleed while chewing or brushing is not usual as it implicates several factors about the overall health.

The cause factor for bleeding gums maybe because of the following.

Inadequate removal of plaque

Plaque is the progressive buildup of bacteria. Unhealthy bacteria that doesn’t get washed off and removed frequently can harden with time and swell up the gums. Presence of bacteria tends to irritate the healthy tissues of gums that causes them to swell. This condition is medically termed as Gingivitis, which is the first stage of a chronic gum disease known as the periodontal disease.

Gum recession

As we leave plaque untreated, it eventually hardens up and grows into tartar. Removal of tartar would require the expertise of a professional. A dentist would suggest that the patient gets a professional dental cleaning session to wipe out any presence of plaque completely.

One of the deadly consequence of leaving your plaque buildup unattended is when your gums begin to recede from teeth. This would lead to the formation of tiny pockets where germs would tend to grow. This condition also initiates the conversion of plaque to tartar. At this point, your mild gum disease would have progressed into a more severe version known as the periodontal disease.

How can we combat bleeding gums?

Bleeding gums can be prevented or brought under control by merely sticking to healthy oral hygiene routines at home. A dentist would advise patients to adhere to preventive dentistry strategies that involve proper and adequate brushing and flossing of teeth. Following this routine, twice a day can undoubtedly prevent and combat the initial stages of both bleeding gums and even bad breath. As you brush, move the bristles of the brush back and forth using short gentle strokes. The tip of the brush can be used to scrub behind teeth properly. Patients are recommended to use antiseptic mouthwashes as it works effectively in killing germs and bacteria.

Patients who are sufferers of gingivitis are advised to begin gum therapy treatment as it would effectively remove the presence of tartar and plaque to minimize the chances of the chronic version of the disease.
