Dental fillings are used to repair teeth that have suffered from cracked, chips, or dental cavities. They also mend teeth that have been broken due to teeth grinding and other external injuries. Getting a dental filling can save teeth from further damage and protect it from abscesses or severe injury.
During a general filling procedure, the dentist will carefully remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill it with a dental filling which can be either Gold, Silver, Amalgam, or even Composite. The filling material prevents further entry of bacteria into the damaged tooth.
What is a cosmetic filling?
A cosmetic filling is much similar to that of a regular filling. It is also commonly known as composite filling. The composite material is either made of glass or resin. It can be shaped and polished to match the exact contour and size of teeth. Composite fillings are durable and hence, lasts longer than other filling material. Being free of mercury, cosmetic fillings are known to be safe and free from any harmful side-effects.
What is the typical procedure involved?
A procedure starts by administering the patient with a local anesthetic. Then, the dentist would neatly create an access hole over the cusp of the tooth where the filling must go into. Any signs of bacteria will be removed before placing the filling material. The dentist would then probe or test the cavity to ensure that all decay has been removed. Once removed, the dentist would carefully apply several layers of filling. After the process is complete, the composite material would be trimmed and shaped accordingly, and the final restoration will be polished.
