Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is a standard procedure that involves removing teeth from its bone sockets. It is generally advised for patients who suffer from tooth decay, internal damage, or just because of overcrowding.

What are the types of tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction comes in two different forms: surgical extraction and a simple extraction. The type of extraction that may be advised to the patient would depend on the jaw structure and cause of extraction.
  • Surgical extraction: A surgical extraction would be advised if the tooth breaks from the gum line or is hidden within the jaw. It is generally performed by an oral surgeon and is considered more complicated than a regular extraction. It would involve making small incisions into the gums to remove the tooth.
  • Simple extraction: Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are more visible. It can be performed by a general dentist and is less complex as the name suggests. Once the tooth is loosened, it is then removed with forceps.

What are the aftercare tips post a tooth extraction?

The recovery time after an extraction is generally short, but it can extend to over a week depending on its complexity. Patients may experience minimal bleeding in the first 24 hours which is entirely normal and subsides pretty quickly. It is advised not to disturb the clot that develops around the wound for a weeks’ time.

Patients will be advised with painkillers and anti-inflammatory capsules. The use of ice packs can undoubtedly alleviate any signs of swelling.

More aftercare instructions will be advised as you visit the dental practice for your tooth extraction.
